Top Ten records of 2008
well I used to listen to a lot more music than I do now, but here's what I think are my 10 faves for the year of 2008 - in no order:
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark (killer packaging on the vinyl, embossed copper printed cover)
Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Cipher (more great packaging, cover art by the fabulous Heather Reynolds with the back cover lettering done by another former Hooligan Jon Killough)
The Sword - Gods of the Earth (if you like Black Sabbath as much as I do, this one is a must)
RJD2 - Magnificent City Instrumentals (much better than last year's "Third Hand" this one gets back to the sounds I like of RJD2. This one I'm having trouble tracking down on vinyl - holler if you got a hook)
AC/DC - Black Ice (yeah, you know what it sounds like)
Girl Talk - Feed the Animals (this is my official Saturday morning clean the house album, great pumped up stuff)
Nick Cave - Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! (another one that you can imagine what it sounds like, still kicking against the pricks)
Bauhaus - Go Away White (this one blew me away, not nostalgic but really sounds like they've evolved and progressed as if they'd still been doing this all these years. Packaging is killer too - white printing on white cover, white vinyl, and a sticker included!)
Dungen - 4 (whoa, I don't even know what to say about this.....it's so kick ass in a kind of Ennio Morricone soundtrack-y kinda thing meets Tortoise and bathed in LSD pschedelia sung in Swedish)
Misfits - 12 Hits From Hell (not 2008 by any stretch, recorded in August of 1980, these 12 tracks were supposed to be released as an album, but ended up being cut up into a couple singles, Bobby Steele was being thrown out of the band and Doyle was replacing him - this recording uses both Doyle's as well as Steele's guitar work so it's the only recordings where the Misfits are a 5 piece and it has a distinct sound. Caroline Records was in talks with Danzig and Jerry Only about releasing this in 2001 but they couldn't get everyone to agree so it got scrapped. Of course the tapes got leaked and someone pressed vinyl with the Caroline Artwork and liner notes, I paid 20 bucks for the vinyl and am stoked to hear my high school years again.)

Posted on Boing Boing this week and shout out to JAYMJONES - hell yeah I remember the Jamaica Bowl!!!!!
Ortofon 2M
New line from Ortofon now I rock Ortofons on my Numark decks but I use the elliptical DJ range and they are excellent. Good sound, very durable I have really no complaints - other than I really don't care for the way they look. This new 2M line look neat in the iMac sort of way and may be worth checking out in my future.

ah, I don't really post anything personal on here but allow me to rant a bit.
Who fucking cares, really? I know it's just for show from the guy at the top but c'mon. Why ruin the car? and how many miles does the "Prince" put on the car a year - 10-20 miles? Why not cut down on the amount of international travel he does if he's concerned for the environment? ohhhhhh that's right, he's not worried about the environment. Prince Charles go jump in the lake you sod.

Desperate Man Blues
Joe Bussard Documentary
Watched this from Netflix last night and it was excellent. It's great from a musical standpoint, from a historical standpoint and from a collector standpoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this and it clocks in at an hour with plenty of extra features if you'd like to learn/see more. From the description:
"Joe Bussard is preserving the raw music of the American South, including blues, hillbilly, bluegrass, gospel and jazz. In combing the region for masterpieces primarily from the 1920s and '30s, Bussard has amassed more than 25,000 records."

Orphan Artworks
considering a major reform of copyright law
FTA:
"CONGRESS is considering a major reform of copyright law intended to solve the problem of “orphan works” — those works whose owner cannot be found. This “reform” would be an amazingly onerous and inefficient change, which would unfairly and unnecessarily burden copyright holders with little return to the public."

Ha ha ha ha hah hah ha hah ha ha
this is funny, although what it really means is that records are going to and are costing more money than ever. My last couple of trips to the record store have shown me that record prices have indeed been on the rise.....even used records cost more.

Lou Dorfsman's Gastrotypographicalassemblage
http://www.underconsideration.com/speakup/archives/004496.html
FTA:
"The icon in question was the Gastrotypographicalassemblage, the wall from the CBS cafeteria that was conceived and designed by Lou Dorfsman, the legendary art director. Though many designers are aware of its existence, few understand the magnitude of the achievement that it represents. The Gastrotypographicalassemblage, commonly referred to as “the wall,” is enormous; it is 33 feet in length and 8 feet in height, give or take a few inches. The piece is a mélange of food-related words and objects, a perfectly orchestrated collage of appetite. At last count, more than 1,450 letters converge to create this experience."

Nike Trash Talk
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/02/nike_talks_trash.php
Steve Nash, the All-Star Guard for the Phoenix Suns, and Nike have teamed up to create the Nike Trash Talk, the first Nike performance basketball sneaker completely produced from manufacturing waste. Nash, who debuted the shoe last night in the Phoenix versus Dallas Mavericks game, appears to be quite a greenie himself: "Any opportunity to promote the environment and preserve our planet is a step in the right direction," he said in a press release.
Who cares about the environment? it's a cool looking shoe....
