My Top Ten Albums for 2010

I'm not a writer as you probably know by now and I sure as hell hate describing music but we're gonna keep this tradition going. These are my top albums of 2010. Again if it didn't come out on vinyl it doesn't exist. I'm sure I forgot a few but here goes.... in no order:

Forrest Swords - "Dagger Paths" - super trippy dubstep-esque

Grinderman - "2" - straight ahead rock and roll with some good noise

Ted Leo + Pharmacists - "Brutalist Bricks" - I can sing this in the shower, Ted keeps rolling

Spoon - "Transference" - best pop crafted songs, I never get enough SPOON

unFact - "Bleached Valentine" - David WM. Sims experimental bass/guitar project - etherial and dron

Four-Tet - "There is Love in You" - trippy repeative music with vocals as an instrument

Kvelertak - "Kvelertak" - metal album of the year for me, so good, in the same vein as Turgonegro

Coliseum - "House With a Curse" - another good rock record, nothing you haven't heard before but I'm feeling it

Flying Lotus - "Cosmogramma" - sparse beats and all around electro weirdness

Caribou - "Swim" - more electronic goodness

the Roots - "How I Got Over" - just cause they're on TV doesn't mean they don't rip - a solid hiphop chunk for 2010

Black Mountain - "Wilderness Heart" - kinda retro, fun to pull on the influences and I love the male/female lead vocal swaps

SKREAM - "Outside the Box" - king of Dubstep makes a more accessible album, but it still kills

Sharon Jones + Dap Kings
- "I Learned the Hard Way" - sweet, sweet soul this album just kills it

High on Fire - "Snakes for the Divine" - crushing metal from Matt Pike and the boys - you know what it sounds like just turn it up

Dead Weather - "Sea of Cowards" - more heavy on the Jack White than the last album but rocky and groovy

Aloe Blacc - "Good Things" - this one hit me from nowhere a solid modern soul record

Flaming Lips - "Dark Side of the Moon" - this doesn't hit the decks too much but I love the effort, "Embryonic" is good too...

OFF! - "First Four EP's" - makes me wanna go skate

Thou - "Summit" - the most brutal sludge Baton Rouge has to offer this one just slays

White Hills - "Dead in Circles" - reissue but killer, wall of sound knock your teeth out space rock

New Comedy Central Identity

I know this is getting the cranky designers out there talking about about how lame this is, but I disagree. This is great.

the old logo was weak - blue buildings and the talk bubble - I never liked it. This one is clean and simple, AND I like that it looks like the Copyright mark too. Bring on the new. Good job CC designer.

Interesting Article on Airliine Security

FTA:
"A short history of airport security: We screen for guns and bombs, so the terrorists use box cutters. We confiscate box cutters and corkscrews, so they put explosives in their sneakers. We screen footwear, so they try to use liquids. We confiscate liquids, so they put PETN bombs in their underwear. We roll out full-body scanners, even though they wouldn’t have caught the Underwear Bomber, so they put a bomb in a printer cartridge. We ban printer cartridges over 16 ounces — the level of magical thinking here is amazing — and they’re going to do something else.

Take all the money spent on new security measures and spend it on investigation and intelligence.

This is a stupid game, and we should stop playing it."

Caught Dead in That

Indeed

Vote Against

I totally agree with this article, people are not voting for candidates in this election they are voting against candidates - in my opinion this is not a smart course of action. This fully illustrates that the general public has lost all faith in politics, me included. It's a game in which I will not participate, go ahead and vote.....how's that going for you?
FTA:
"More precisely, it is a rejection of a bipartisan political elite that's lost touch with the people they are supposed to serve. Based on our polling, 51% now see Democrats as the party of big government and nearly as many see Republicans as the party of big business. That leaves no party left to represent the American people."

thanks Wes!

Chipotle Ditched Ad Agencies

Mr. Crumpacker(Chief Marketing Officer) points out that the chain hasn't added a menu item in 17 years and it also does not have a regular cadence of pricing promotions. For those reasons, he said, agencies' experience with other fast food chains is irrelevant.

"We've looked at TV; we've looked at it all," Mr. Crumpacker said. "Chipotle was built on word-of-mouth marketing. We're focused on reigniting word-of-mouth marketing, rather than big advertising campaigns."

Love this kind of attitude, and I still love Chipotle.

Facebook to Become Bigger than Google in 5 Years

Pretty cool read if you're into this kind of stuff.....

FTA:"Even if every single Facebook user performs just as many searches with Google as ever—including Google Instant, mobile search, and YouTube—Facebook will inexorably grow as big as Google is today and maybe bigger, because Madison Avenue’s brands are less interested in targeting than they are in broadcasting to vast mother-loving buckets of demographically correct eyeballs, and Facebook has become the perfect platform for that."

Murakami at Versailles

The Takashi Murakami show features 22 works including 11 site-specific pieces which aim to create a story within a story. Curator Laurent Le Bon states, "The unique experience seeks above all to spark a reflection of the contemporary nature of our monuments and indispensable need to create out own era." Murakami ties the past to the future by placing bizarre brightly-coloured creatures in ornately decorated stately rooms. The show will be running until 12 December 2010.

Digging in the Crates

this is pretty good short essay from Ta-Nehisi Coates of the Atlantic on why Andy Rooney doesn't know music. A friend of mine in college would always argue with me about music, I was into anything outside the mainstream and he was into classic rock. All of our arguments ended the same way - I could talk about any band he knew of, but he could never talk about bands I knew of. Ta-Nehisi breaks it down - "Whatever you think of the music, no self-respecting hip-hop head, at that time, could ever get away with saying, "Man, I don't be listening to no Ella Fitzgerald!" Your friends would have looked at you like you were crazy. Knowledge—not the kind of ignorance Rooney evinces here—was prized."

On July 25th 1980

Back in Black is released by AC/DC. The first album I ever had on vinyl that was my very own. My Uncle Mickey gave it to me on my 10th birthday in 1980. Yes, I still own it. I loved it so much and with some dough from my Grandma from the same birthday I went to the record store and bought Highway to Hell. And then my love affair with Bon Scott began. I truly believe Back and Black is a stellar album but can't to think of what it might have been if Bon had stayed alive. Anyway here's some more on Back in Black.
